Jeju Island: Where the terror lives and lovers make holidays

Honeymoon in the Maldives, Niagara Falls or in Paris. Honeymooner is drawn to romantic and beautiful places. The South Korean island of Jeju Island is becoming increasingly popular with newlyweds. That the island is the shadow of a dark past, know the least.

Between the white dream beaches and romantic sunsets, one would not think that Jeju Island was the scene of a drama that the Korean government allegedly tried to cover up for 60 years. In 1947, the South Korean Workers' Party called for protests against the regime. The police and the army were sometimes brutal.

A veil of silence

To isolate the insurgents inland, all the villages that were more than four kilometers off the coast were razed to the ground. Death sentences and shootings were the result. A collective grave should be located directly under the runway of the local airport. The work began only in the 1980s, before that the government put a veil of silence over the events.

Some of the sites can even visit tourists today. The village of Gonul-dong - or at least what's left of it - is one of them. But also caves in which insurgents hid are targets of many tourists who want to know something about the island's history.

Romantic places, like the "Love Land" park for lovers, get under this light but a bit bitter aftertaste.
