Beth Carvalho: Samba star dies at the age of 72 in Rio de Janeiro

Legendary Samba singer Beth Carvalho is dead. She passed away at 5:30 pm on Tuesday afternoon, as confirmed on her official Facebook page. Carvalho had been surrounded in her last hours in Rio de Janeiro by family and friends. The singer leaves "a valuable legacy for Brazilian music". She will remain "unforgotten for her struggle for the culture and the Brazilian people".

Carvalho is considered one of the most important influences in samba music and has often been involved in social, cultural and political projects. One of her biggest hits is "Coisinha do Pai", who traveled to Mars with the Rover Sojourner. On board were also songs by Bob Marley, the Dire Straits, Van Halen, Frank Sinatra or Pink Floyd.
