Apple Pay: If you can buy a Bockwurst with your smartphone ...

After the pay service Google Pay has been available for some time in this country, now Apple has also introduced its service Apple Pay in Germany. With immediate effect, customers can pay cashless with their iPhone, iPad, MacBook and Apple Watch throughout Germany. How easy it all works, Apple has presented in Munich. spot on news was there and was able to convince himself of it.

These banks are supported

To be able to use Apple Pay, your own bank or financial services provider must be partners. Apple's partners in Germany include American Express, Deutsche Bank, HVB, comdirect, N26, o2 Banking, Hanseatic Bank, boon, bunq, fidor Bank, Edenred and VIMPay.

For example, Deutsche Bank has established the option of applying for a virtual MasterCard debit card, a so-called "Virtual Card", free of charge and without a renewal fee in its own app, which can be used with Apple Pay. In fact, in one show, everything in an existing account was settled within minutes - and the card was automatically added to your own Apple Wallet. There you can easily deposit other cards.

Customers who do not want to change the bank or apply for a new card unfortunately still have to wait for their chosen institution to be supported. Apple is working according to their own information to get more partners on the boat. Already, support for Ing-Diba, Deutsche Kreditbank and Consorsbank is already announced for 2019.

Here you can shop

Once you have deposited your supported card in the Apple Wallet, you can go on a shopping tour - both in real stores and online. Many offers are already supported and many more are to follow. For example, if you want to do the weekly shopping, you can pay cashlessly via the iPhone at Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd, Lidl, Norma, Netto and Real. And on the way home you can get a little something at Starbucks, Burger King or McDonald's. Also supported are, inter alia, C & A, H & M, Galeria Kaufhof, Media Markt, Saturn, Rossmann, many other points of contact and of course Apple itself.

At the Allianz Arena in Munich, Jennifer Bailey, VP of Internet Software and Services and Apple Pay, showed how easy it is to buy an Apple Pay ticket, buy a Bockwurst, or buy merchandise. Just confirm the payment by face recognition (Face ID) or fingerprint (Touch ID) and the thing is eaten in a few seconds. Fans can also try this out directly at the next home game. Payments should generally be possible at any NFC-enabled terminal. Apple estimates that about 60 percent of the current terminals in Germany should already work with Apple Pay.

Apple Pay is also supported on the websites of many online retailers and in many apps. The example of the Flixbus app shows that a corresponding ticket has been picked out, booked, paid for and stowed within its own Apple Wallet within a minute. Also supported are, for example, the offers from Foodora, mytaxi, Zalando, Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) or even the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter.

How safe is Apple Pay?

"We're excited to bring Apple Pay to Germany today for a simpler, faster, safer and more secure payment option with the iPhone and Apple Watch," says Bailey. In addition to this comfort, Apple assures again and again the security of Apple Pay. When a user buys something, a device-specific number is sent along with a unique transaction code.

The own card number is never stored on the device or the servers of Apple. Even the dealers receive only the most necessary information. Example Flixbus: As the ticket for a booked trip goes straight to the Apple Wallet, the address of a user does not have to be transmitted. When ordering online at Zalando and Co., this is of course something else. Also corresponding transaction data are not stored by Apple.

These devices are included

Apple Pay supports virtually all newer devices of the house. You need an iPhone 6 or newer, iPhone SE, iPad Pro, iPad (5th generation and newer), iPad Air 2 or iPad mini 3 and later. It is also possible to use Apple Pay in the Safari browser on any Mac introduced in 2012 or later with macOS Sierra. Then, however, the payment must be confirmed with an iPhone or an Apple Watch. However, this intermediate step is also done quickly. On the new MacBook Pro and MacBook Air, a payment can also be confirmed directly by Touch ID.
