Our skincare expert Elisabeth Bouhadana is international director of scientific communication at L? Ore? Al Paris, has been working in the business for over 20 years and knows how to develop a product and how to test its compatibility and effectiveness. Thanks to your questions and their answers, we get an exciting insight into the cosmetics world.

Where do you get the inspiration for new products?

"We listen carefully when women express their wishes," says the expert. L? Oréal Paris conducts studies, uses trend scouts, and uses social listening tools to monitor exactly what is emerging in social networks. Even the latest methods of aesthetic dermatology affect product development? "and the traditionally effective ingredients from nature, such as peonies or honey, inspire us again and again," says Elisabeth Bouhadana.

To whom or on what do you test new products?

What happens when the idea becomes a new product? "In the first step, we conduct a scientific review of all ingredients, their dosage and composition," says Elisabeth Bouhadana. • This is followed by tolerance testing on our reconstructed model skin in the laboratory and at least 600 applications on different, genuine skin types.

Skin Care: So much science behind it

Model skin? So what is that?

Nobody wants skin care to be tested on animals. L? Oréal was therefore very early in the development of alternatives. Since the 1970s, the company has been involved in the reconstruction of human skin. Here, cell cultures are used to produce substances that have similar elasticity and resistance to human skin. Thanks to this? Episkin? L? Oréal has been able to do without animal experiments since 1989? already 14 years before the legal ban.

The Episkin tests are followed by 600 application tests. Why just 600?

Quite simple: 50 testers test a product under real conditions for 4 weeks, we assume 3 applications per week ?, explains Elisabeth Bouhadana. 50 x 4 x 3 = 600. Logical!

How do you assemble the subjects to represent a representative group?

L? Oréal Paris always confirms the effectiveness of new products through independent institutes. The institutes select suitable testers from their extensive databases. "It is important to us that at least 30 percent of the subjects have sensitive skin," explains the expert. So the compatibility can be ensured for all skin types.
