"The Wall" - classic literature on the canvas

About the movie "The Wall"

A woman makes a weekend trip with her husband and wife on their Alpine hut. When the couple does not return from a visit to the village, does she go hunting with dog Lynx? and push near the hut against an invisible, insurmountable wall that separates them from the rest of the world. On her own, the woman starts a fight for survival ...

It takes only a few lines to summarize the plot of Marlen Haushofer's novel "The Wall", but behind it lies a work of great complexity and force - for director Julian Pölsler his book of life. So the Austrian has done everything to film the novel, which was actually considered unfilmable: because it consists entirely of the interior of the nameless woman (how do you find exciting cinema images?), Because the woman with an invisible "opponent", the wall , is confronted (how do you want to portray the cinematic?), because the novel offers so many possibilities of interpretation (how do you live up to that in the cinema?).

That "The Wall" can also exist on the big screen, owes the movie mainly actress Martina Gedeck. She gives the nameless protagonist a face that has not gotten enough after 100 minutes, and a voice that is followed by longer monologue passages. The big alpine stage belongs to the setting, her fellow players are the mighty, at times violent nature and a few animals, especially her faithful companion lynx.

Although Pölsler's film ultimately can not reach the intensity of the novel, but who knows the book leaves the cinema with the feeling that they have seen the (probably) best possible filming of "The Wall".
