"The principle of fashion: When you have enough of one thing, you want another"

Tara Jarmon studied political science before founding her fashion label with her husband. We visited the dedicated designer in Paris

ChroniquesDuVasteMonde: They live in France but were born and raised in Canada. What nationality does your fashion actually have?

TARA JARMON: She is 100 percent Parisian. I have always admired the Parisian women: they are elegant, sophisticated and stylish, never trendy or bold. They have their own character and are aware of it.

ChroniquesDuVasteMonde: Are these the women you make your fashion for?

TARA JARMON: Not only, I sell all over the world, also in Japan or Italy, for example. But when designing, I already have women in mind who live and work in big cities - and want to stand out from the crowd. The woman wearing Tara Jarmon wants to be recognized and noticed. To achieve this "Ah, there she is!" Effect, I like to work with colors.

ChroniquesDuVasteMonde: In the current collection for example with orange or pink.

TARA JARMON: I like green too, but nobody seems to like it. It sells badly. Yellow, unfortunately, too. The most popular are still black and white. As a designer you always want to offer something new, but the customers do not want a little revolution every season. But for me, fashion still means leaving the familiar behind, trying out new things over and over again.

ChroniquesDuVasteMonde: Before you became a designer, you studied political science. Why are you not in politics today?

TARA JARMON: Because I fell in love twice - in a man and in fashion. I came to Paris to study at the age of 23 and met my husband David who made men's clothing. With his help, I founded my own label, which quickly became successful. I found it very exciting to be professional with fashion.

ChroniquesDuVasteMonde: More exciting than politics?

TARA JARMON: Fashion and politics are all about the same thing: you have to be interested in what the world looks like. I never regretted having chosen fashion. And as a designer I can still help politicians to look better.

ChroniquesDuVasteMonde: Do they need that?

TARA JARMON: Your Angela Merkel does not do that badly, but does not she always wear the same combination? I've never seen her in a dress before. She could be a bit more stylish. A little more female, less boxy.

ChroniquesDuVasteMonde: We would not talk about male professional politicians right now, would you? They can wear the same black suit every day without anyone getting upset.

TARA JARMON: That's right, that's unfair. Nicolas Sarkozy, until recently, wore hideous suits and was still elected president. But I think we can still be happy that our politics and our working world have become much more feminine. When I started doing fashion in the 80s, women appeared as assistants or secretaries. Today, they have conquered leadership positions, rediscovering their female strengths and also emphasizing them confidently. Shoulder pads do not need them anymore.

ChroniquesDuVasteMonde: Are more women or more men in your team?

TARA JARMON: Actually only women. I love men. But I prefer working with women. It goes without saying. Put four women who do not know each other into a room - they will always find a theme that connects them. I'm not so sure about men. , ,

ChroniquesDuVasteMonde: But when it comes to fashion, each has a different idea.

TARA JARMON: And yet not again: Everyone wants to feel comfortable in their belongings. If I tailor too tight sleeves, I realize that at the latest when nobody buys my dress. How to move something when you can not move?

ChroniquesDuVasteMonde: Well, the fit should be right. But then you have to choose the right fabrics, patterns, silhouettes. , ,

TARA JARMON: I always used to say: I am my target group. When I saw something I liked, I was convinced that others would like it too. Today, I sometimes wonder how I could walk through the fashion world with such a naive, careless self-confidence. Because that's unpredictable: This season are sweaters in the trend, the next blouses again. Only the principle remains the same: if you have enough of one thing, you want another. And that's just as well. I certainly do not like routine.

ChroniquesDuVasteMonde: After routine your life does not sound at all. In addition to your job, you also got three children.

TARA JARMON: Please do not ask the three of you how I got it! They would answer you: Maman never went to parents' home. I have always had too little time for my children, that's something they really took offense at. But I need my independence. It has always been important to me to have my own life. My passion is this profession.

ChroniquesDuVasteMonde: And your daughter, will she someday follow in your footsteps?

TARA JARMON: She is now 17. Everything is possible for her, everything new. That's why I envy them a lot. Oh, she should just try everything.
