The author Stefanie Zweig is dead. Last Friday she died in the circle of her family after a short, serious illness at the age of 81 years. She became world famous through the novel "Nirgenwo in Afrika", which was later filmed by Caroline Link and won an Oscar.

The Nazi period was spent by Stefanie Zweig and her Jewish parents in Kenya after they emigrated in 1938. Much of her childhood took place on a farm, and the later author gradually discovered the land for herself. In 1947 she returned to Germany after the war.

At first she worked from 1959 as cultural editor of the Abendpost / Nachtausgabe in Frankfurt, whose feature pages she directed from 1963 to 1988. However, as she increasingly missed Africa, the land of her childhood, she began to capture her impressions and memories in several autobiographical novels.

The big breakthrough finally came in 1995 with the novel "Nowhere in Africa", where she processed her experiences from Kenya. The book became a worldwide success and in 1993 she tied in with her novel "Somewhere in Germany", in which she tells of her life after returning to Germany. Overall, her books reached a circulation of over 7.5 million copies worldwide.
