Mother receives donated uterus: This baby is a little miracle

You do not know each other? but with the uterus of the one another woman now gave birth to her child: For the first time in the US the recipient of a uterus donation was given a baby. "I think everyone of us had tears in our eyes when the baby was born," says the attending physician at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. There, doctors of the young mother had also previously transplanted the organ. The patient and her husband want to remain anonymous.

Women believed throughout their lives, they would never have children

The hospital is one of the few that makes the difficult procedure. Patients are women who were born without a uterus or lost the organ through illness? Women who often spent their entire lives believing they would never have children. With the first born after such a transplant in the US baby, the doctors now give hope to these women.

Donor in this case is a 36-year-old nurse. She already has two sons at the age of four and six years. Together with her husband she made the decision not to have any more children? and giving another woman the chance to become a mother. Her motivation: "If they put the baby in your arms," says the 36-year-old, "then your life will change forever."

"We do transplants all day," says Dr. Giuliano Testa, head of the transplant center at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. But, "This is not the same thing, I totally underestimated what this type of transplantation means to women, and I can not describe in words what I learned emotionally."

Already eight successful births in Sweden

Worldwide, it was not the first birth of a child after such a procedure. In Sweden, eight children have already been born after uterine transplants, in a special clinic in Gothenburg. The fact that other doctors succeeded in successfully repeating the difficult procedure makes us confident.

Around 15,000 women in Germany who were born without a womb or have lost it due to illness are living in Germany. The nation's first center for uterine transplants is currently being developed at the University Hospital Erlangen:
