iPhone XR: How good is the new smartphone?

The iPhone Xs and the iPhone Xs Max are absolute premium smartphones. There is nothing to shake. Unfortunately, this does not only refer to the excellent impression they leave on the user, but also to the price. That's why some users may have been waiting for the release of the iPhone XR on October 26th.

Much of the technology used here is the same, the smartphone is - depending on the storage variant - but sometimes much cheaper. That could make the iPhone XR the secret star of this year's Apple Keynote, where the three smartphone models were introduced in September. spot on news could already try out the new iPhone XR.

With the iPhone XR you can do virtually everything that you can do with your brothers. Inside, like the other two models, is the powerful new A12 Bionic chip that makes using apps and iOS fun. It is the first 7 nanometer chip that has been installed in a smartphone so far. According to Apple, apps can be started up to 30 percent faster, for example. Meanwhile, a new battery ensures that the battery life is about 1.5 hours longer than the iPhone 8 Plus.

These are the differences

The biggest differences are not only the price, but also in terms of display, design and camera. This is particularly noticeable in the appealing case of the iPhone XR. While the brothers come in the more muted colors of silver, gold and "space gray", the XR is sometimes quite colorful.

Anyone who is brave enough and wants to make a colorful statement can buy the smartphone not only in white and black, but also in "(Product) Red", yellow, blue and coral. Of course this is all a matter of taste, but spot on news found that particularly bright variations like coral look stunning in the hand.

The screen is also enough for the iPhone XR almost to the edge of the device and lies with 6.1 inches (15.5 centimeters diagonal) in the middle between Xs (5.8 inches) and Xs Max (6.5 inches). In contrast to the brothers, there is no OLED installed, but an LCD "Liquid Retina" display with a lower resolution of 1792 X 828 pixels, but that does not really diminish the overall impression.

In direct comparison, the display may not be quite as sharp come along and the colors seem a little less dynamic than the Xs or Xs Max, but who does not hold the devices directly next to each other, this is not noticeable in everyday use. The XR still offers a very handsome and bright display, which leaves nothing to be desired in normal use.

Fantastic pictures

In contrast to the Xs and Xs Max is also the XR no dual camera installed, but this has only a limited effect on the quality of the snapped images. The 12-megapixel camera with wide-angle lens still offers the opportunity to shoot fantastic shots for a smartphone. This is ensured, for example, by "Smart HDR" and numerous other functions such as a new depth-of-field control, which makes it possible to give portraits of friends a certain something even after recording. Also in terms of richness of detail and colors of the snapped pictures, there is nothing to moan.

With these differences, the iPhone XR may not quite come close to Xs and Xs Max, but it does not have to. On its own, the new smartphone is an excellent device that should offer better value for most users than its brothers.

While the iPhone XR costs depending on the storage variant between 849 euros and 1019 euros, the prices of iPhone Xs and Xs Max go only at 1,149 euros respectively 1,249 euros going on. Thus, the XR is still more expensive than many a competitor, but you also get a lot. For many users, it should actually be the secret star of the keynote.

Apple and privacy

Not least in connection with the iPhone XR Apple also points out that the company is increasingly on the subject of privacy. For example, Apple assures that no personal information is collected in order to sell it to other companies or advertisers. The user should also be able to decide for himself which information he shares - and which not.

For example, Apple uses so-called "differential privacy" to evaluate analysis data and thus to improve the user experience for all users. This means that random information about submitted data is added so that it can not be clearly assigned to a person or device. Only in combination with many other, unassigned data creates an overall picture, which is evaluated by Apple.
