Interview with Nevio: "My music is not only amore"

Nevio sits in the hotel lobby, holding the phone to his ear with one hand and rubbing his eyes with the other. The next dates have to be discussed soon. Then he hangs up, apologizes politely. The waiter brings two espressos - and Nevio praises: "Very good, the right plural!" He rolls the "r", his Franconian home sends his regards. He briefly thinks about lying down for the interview. "Would be nice." Then he prefers to sit and talk about his meeting with Eros Ramazotti, his mother's food and casting shows.

BYM.de: What do you think, why are so many Germans raving about Italy?

Nevio: Maybe it's because Italians are no longer part of German society. I mean cliché: in every German Kaff there is a ice cream parlor Venezia and a pizzeria Roma. This shows that the Italians have already gained a foothold here for three generations. And many Germans regularly go to Italy on vacation, they like the scenery and the way of life. There is only one point where Italy and Germany will never understand, and that is football. Unfortunately, Germany has never won against Italy in a major tournament.

BYM.de: And that makes you happy.

Nevio: That makes me very happy as an Italian fan. But otherwise, I think, the two countries are very sympathetic. I myself am the product of a German-Italian marriage, thus a proof of the good relations.

BYM.de: Your mother is German ...

Nevio: and my dad is Italian, that's right.

BYM.de: Can you explain why so many German women like Italians?

Nevio: Oh, that's always a cliché. Maybe because the Italians are said to be a good lover. Because he is good with women and because he? different than me ? always burned brown. As far as I am concerned, my music always has nothing to do with amore. That is not true. But there are worse clichés than being associated with love.

BYM.de: Speaking of clichés, what do you prefer, beer or red wine?

Nevio: red wine is relaxing, something for after work. To celebrate, if you really want to hit the shit, I think beer is definitely better. Since you do not get such a heavy head. But you should not ask me, I only drink alcohol from time to time.

Music for lovemaking

BYM.de: Bratwurst or spaghetti?

Nevio: My mom is very skilled. She learned all the secret recipes from my Nonna in Italy. The first course is mostly Italian, for example a pasta dish. And as a second course, she cooks something German. The result is the best of both sides!

BYM.de: You made the video for your first single "Sento" in New York. As far as I understand, the song is about separations and pain. Do you have a recipe for heartache?

Nevio: Yes, take three peeled tomatoes, a little olive oil of the best vintage ... No, nonsense. Sure, the song is about a relationship, but it does not necessarily have to be over. It is more like questioning the relationship and thinking, for example, what would happen if one lost the ability to feel. "Sentire" is the Italian word for feeling, but it also means smelling, tasting, tasting at the same time. This is what the song is about. He is not negative, but thoughtful.

BYM.de: You can see how far away it is with my knowledge of Italian.

Nevio: That does not matter, I'm not a fan of given interpretations anyway. The video is also ambiguous. When someone hears my music, I do not want to dictate clearly what they should think or feel.

BYM.de: Where should you listen to your music? Or at what?

Nevio (thinks for a long time): Loving it, I think that would be great.

BYM.de: Is it true that Eros Ramazotti is your role model?

Nevio: Well, role model ... He's just the musician I'm always associated with. We were eating together, he is very nice. But he's making other music than me, and he's older. I do not claim to follow in his footsteps. His music is purely Italian, I am more European than I am.

On the next page: What Nevio thinks about casting shows

BYM.de: Do you think it would be good if, someday like Eros Ramazotti, you were the symbol of Italian music and would run in every pizzeria?

Nevio: Maybe I can start with that when I'm 50 - but not yet.

BYM.de: Did you watch the last season of DSDS?

Nevio: Honestly, I did not look, I did not have time. Even before I was in Season 3, I did not pursue all that. I was studying in Italy, it did not exist there. My dad got me in there, he signed me in then. What I think is a bit of a pity is this negative aftertaste attached to artists from casting shows. I do not know why, maybe because some musicians have sprung from this format, which does not necessarily stand for quality. But the whole life is a casting. If you apply for a new job, it's no different.

BYM.de: So you would join DSDS again?

Nevio: Sure. The format was an important platform for me to show my talent. From a marketing standpoint alone: Which record company allows a newcomer to perform in ten Saturday-evening shows with millions of viewers?

BYM.de: And why are so many ex-superstars disappearing anyway?

Nevio: I do not want to pee anyone's leg and guess why something is not working. I dont know. Maybe some are not perceived as artists, but only as a product. My approach has always been to keep my career consistent and long term. Maybe you just believe me. I do not always want to justify myself for joining DSDS. With Kelly Clarkson or Leona Lewis, for example, the US or UK is on the CD and the radio editor thinks "Geil, we have to play immediately." Without knowing that they also sprung from a casting show. We have a complex to be proud of the music that comes from our own country. That is too bad.
