Baking donuts yourself: The best recipe

Donuts yourself - this is how it works:

Ingredients for 12 donuts:

  • 450 grams of flour
  • 1 packet of dry yeast
  • 180 grams of sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 organic lemon
  • 2 eggs
  • 125 grams of soft butter
  • 200 milliliters of milk
  • Flour for the work surface
  • Coconut oil (or oil, for frying)
  • 6 tablespoons powdered sugar

Preparation of donuts:

  1. Mix flour and dried yeast in a bowl. Add sugar, salt, grated lemon zest, eggs, soft butter and lukewarm milk. First knead with the dough hooks of the hand mixer, then with your hands to a smooth dough.
  2. Cover in a warm place for about 1 hour until the dough volume has visibly increased. Knead the dough vigorously on a lightly floured work surface and roll out about 11/2 cm thick. With floured donut-molds (or round cookie-cutters Ø 8 cm), cut out 8 pieces of dough (with a hole Ø 2 cm in the middle).
  3. Covered and allowed to rest for about 30 minutes. Heat the frying fat in a deep pan (it has the right temperature if bubbles form on a wooden stick dipped in the hot fat). Bake the donuts in each side for about 2 minutes. Lift out with a foam trowel and drain on kitchen paper. Roll donuts in sifted powdered sugar.

Fry or bake donuts?

However, if you do not want to be so greasy you can donuts bake in the oven: 200 degrees, convection 180 degrees, gas level 4 bake for about 15 minutes. There are also special donut bakeware, similar to muffin molds, in which the donuts are baked in the oven.

Do I need a donut maker?

To make donut baking easier, the donut maker was invented. Similar to the waffle iron, it has a shape into which the dough is poured. Donutmakers usually have room for six to seven small donuts. However, not every donut recipe is also suitable for baking in Donutmaker. Attention: When buying pay attention to the right size, otherwise there will be mini-donuts in the end.
