American Apparel advertises with 62-year-old model

The fashion industry is usually not known for great diversity - at least as far as ideals of beauty are concerned. The overwhelming majority of women who present clothes on catwalks and in ads are slim, young and white. At the same time, attracting attention in this competitive market is everything.

Probably that's why some labels are now targeting a more diverse image of beauty. At Fashion Week in Berlin, the label Umasan let older and younger, black and white models go together over the catwalk. The New York luxury department store Barneys shows the new spring / summer collection of transgender models. And American Apparel recently advertises with a 62-year-old for underwear. On the Instagram Instagram Instagram, the American fashion chain released a shot of actress Jacky O'Shaughnessy in a strapless lace bustier and a pink lace panties. The caption reads: "Sexy has no expiration date" - sexy has no expiration date.

Confident, the woman with long gray hair, dark eyebrows and pink lips looks into the camera. Despite the dreary old building background, it exudes a beguiling elegance. Is the fashion industry discovering the eroticism of old age? Or is the recording just another conscious provocation? That's exactly what American Apparel specializes in - in addition to skinny skinny jeans, colorful leggings and crop-free T-shirts. The label puts dolls with pubic hair in the shop window or lets employees without panties pose for campaign pictures.

At the same time, the question arises whether women, as the slogan suggests, want to be sexy at all. Nevertheless, the campaign hits a nerve: Attraction is not a matter of age - this is true for fashion and for life anyway.

Will American Apparel ditch the racy ads? (May 2024).
