Terry Gilliam: That's why he is glad that "Don Quixote" finally comes to the movies

It was a long way for director Terry Gilliam (77, "12 Monkeys"). On September 27th, his heart project "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote" will be released in German cinemas. After almost 30 years of production, the film was finally filmed in 2017 and premiered at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. "We had the actors, we had the right weather and off we went," says Terry Gilliam in an interview with the news agency spot on news. He is glad that "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote" finally comes to the movies: "I think the film is better today than if I had shot it 20 years ago."

Not only is the story richer, he is also satisfied with his cast. Had he filmed the movie as he had done almost two decades ago, one would not have been there: Adam Driver (34, "Star Wars: The Awakening of Power"). "He's brilliant, his performance is special," says Gilliam. The 34-year-old was "astute and extremely funny". He makes it with his acting performance that his character is hated at first, but in the course of the film as irritating and great perceived.

"It was wonderful"

Not only from Drivers Performance is the director blown away, but also from Jonathan Pryce (71, "Game of Thrones") as Don Quixote. A role that Pryce wanted to play. Originally, however, Michael Palin (75, "The Life of Brian"), Gilliam's former Monty Python colleague, held the role. But after renewed rotation delays in 2016, he jumped off to devote himself to other projects. Jonathan Pryce took over "enthusiastic".

He was completely absorbed in the role. "He was so funny," recalls Gilliam. From the beginning, Pryce had put his own mark on the character and thus developed his character. In addition, it was a pleasure to experience Pryce together with Adam Driver. The two are an unbeatable duo. That had become clear already at the first samples. "Jonathan hit the spot while Adam took it easy," says Gilliam. By and by, both would have improvised. "It was wonderful," gushes the 77-year-old.

"I do not care if you like him or not"

How the film will arrive at the cinema audience, will show. One thing Terry Gilliam definitely does is, "Everyone always says I'm not supposed to do it, but I read film reviews, I'm curious how people perceive the movie and what they have to say about it, I do not care if they do like him or not. " He goes on to say, "If it's a clever, bad review, I think that's great, because I know how flawed everything I do is nothing is perfect, so from that point of view, a bad review can give a lot."

From September 27, 2018 "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote" can be seen in German cinemas.
