Nathalie Jeffcott, 36, photographer and decorator, and her husband Nicholas Fitzgerald, 37, electrical engineer, collect everything that the everyday life of the 50s and 60s has produced in beautiful and original. In search of a home, the Australians fell in love with the Fitzroy district of Melbourne, which attracts creative people from all over the country with its small junk shops and design studios. They found an old factory building and converted it into a light-flooded loft. Because the couple needs space, for son Arthur and the many treasures that it has acquired over the years on flea markets and file sharing.

Nathalie's passion is furniture, kitchens and household items, while Nicholas collects old toys. The two of them equipped their two-storey loft with the most beautiful pieces. But the house is not a museum! Arthur may (and should) play with all the colorful giraffes, spinning tops, dolls and cars.

And if you would like to take the sweets with you, you can do that: on the ground floor, there is a shop where the two parts of your collection are also sold.

The kitchen

In the kitchen Nathalie has housed her biscuit collection and her nine kitchen clocks in pastel colors. Fittingly: the approximately 50-year-old kitchen cabinet, table and chairs, reminiscent of ice cream parlor furniture from the 60s.

Self made: Nicholas built the kitchen block out of precious metal and the old blue doors of a tool cabinet that stood in a car paint shop.

Brightness: The style should be fun, not pushy. That is why the basic tone of the floor, walls and furniture remains light. This creates optical space and lets individual colored elements, such as the cabinet doors, shine.

The living room

Sofa set and dresser are original pieces from the 50s, as well as the wicker chair and of course Arthur's toy! The linoleum with the colored accent tiles harmonizes well, but is new.

The bedroom and children's room

Here are many colorful little pieces like pictures and toys their place. They provide color and happiness. The quiet balance creates the subtle dark gray carpet.

Bed, chest and chests of drawers are original pieces from the 50s made of painted wood. The square wooden shelf and bedding in the nursery are from Ikea.

Setup Tips: This is part of the retro style

The furniture The basis is colorful original furniture and accessories from the 50s and 60s. So that the retro look seems relaxed and does not kill, simple, modern elements are combined time and again, whether built by myself or by Ikea.

The colors Typical of the 50s and 60s: pastel shades like light yellow, mint green and light blue. But also strong colors. Fittingly, the light gray linoleum floor was chosen with colorful accent tiles.

The materials Colored or clear lacquered wood, non-ferrous metals, glossy plastic, especially with the seat covers of the chairs - and of course the good old linoleum. These modern wooden furniture in muted tones and restrained metal and glass elements fit.
