Pure freedom: How does it live on a houseboat?

Swinging with the waves, two roof terraces and when you're tired, you just keep on sailing? wherever you want. Houseboats, a quiet dream for those who love water and hate their neighbors. The thought of houseboats is inevitably associated with great weather, sunbathing on deck, and a gentle splash on the bow.

From the dream?

Unfortunately, as usual, the reality is different. The annoying summer in Germany would be there ever point one. Who scrubs the deck? Nobody. The kitchen of the houseboat feels smaller than the kitchenette from the student apartment. A Thermomix has no place there. What the hell, we eat ashore, is more comfortable anyway. In the long run that will be expensive. Speaking of money, you should have a lot if you want to buy a houseboat and operate. In the purchase you should make at least 100,000 euros loose, depending on size and equipment requirements 200,000 euros can be a better starting capital. The Mare living ship "Vancouver" from the cover picture costs from 179,000 euros plus VAT. While the purchase is still exciting and enthusiastic, does the disillusionment come with the (ongoing) development costs? So electricity access, sanitation, walkways: again between 70,000 and 120,000 euros. That will probably be nothing in this life. Too bad.

Rent instead of buying

Significantly cheaper board and paddle for stand-up paddling. The boards cost the retailer an average of 1,000 euros and at LIDL there is even a whole set for only 500 euros? Snapper! Not only makes you as brown as sunbathing on the deck of the houseboat, but also gives you Mukkies. And if it must necessarily be a houseboat, why not first with a duck laying for?
Ok, ok, both are not exactly the same. But let's be honest, do we really want to live on a houseboat? So forever or at least longer? Maybe first sample Schipper.

Renting a houseboat costs about 200 euros per night. With an occupancy of 5 people makes the 40 euros per capita. As a starting point is "My Olle" (picture left) from the houseboat rental Seeblick. A bit of splashing on the lake near Leipzig and everything you need for a short trip.

Who wants to rent or buy a houseboat, should note that boats can only be driven up to a certain performance (boat) license. Nevertheless, many rentals are on the safe side and only offer boats that are anchored. A look at Airbnb can also be worthwhile: Holiday destinations like Amsterdam have some houseboat entries and even so-called "botels".
It does not have to be in the same boat and maybe it will work out into the cool water with the jump out of the kitchen ...
