How this artist encourages victims of violence

Every day, around the world, women are victims of physical or sexual violence. Mostly they know the perpetrators, it is their partners, fathers or uncles. In Germany alone, a quarter of all women aged 16 to 85 experience domestic violence at least once in their lives, according to a representative study.

The violence leaves traces in the soul, often enough on the body. Many women live with scars that remind them daily of the abuse. Brazilian tattoo designer Flavia Carvalho decided to do something for these women - and started her project "A Pele da Flor" ("The Skin of the Flower").

For two years, Flavia has been covering the scars of victims of domestic violence with their tattoos - for free. Even women who have undergone a mastectomy, she decorates the chest. You can choose the design yourself. So she turns painful memories into something beautiful. To something that gives strength to women.

"I had no idea I was going to attract so much attention," the artist said in an interview with the Huffington Post. It was a spontaneous idea. A pretty good one, we find. See for yourself!
