Living with fragrance

Long dark evenings, frosty outside temperatures. , , and inside, the summer draws through the house, delicate lavender aroma is in the air. Or rather a touch of baked apple at the touch of a button - by room fragrance? You have the choice. It's also child's play to set yourself up in your own home, to give yourself and others a pleasant sense of well-being through the sense of smell, and perhaps even to screw a little bit on your own image. Hotels or large fashion houses, for example, have done it: with sophisticated aroma compositions they give themselves and their premises worldwide a distinctive, special touch (see interview page 42). Even the offer for the private sector, so-called "home fragrances", which want to conjure up a good climate in a jiffy, is huge: atomizer sprays, diffusers with wooden sticks, scented stones and candles there. Even iron water in the note of the perfume favorites is available. Which type of fragrance you choose is a matter of taste.

scented candles

Scented candles for example. They are really something for romantics. But nothing for sensitive ones. The candles store aromas in their wax, and when it burns warm and soft, the fragrance molecules are distributed quite intensely in the room. To prevent headaches, the candles should not burn for more than an hour or two at a time. Keep wicks short, which prevents the soot from potentially hazardous substances are released into the environment. Especially aromatic: candles with plenty of essential oils (and often with vegetable wax instead of paraffin). However, these candles have their price, mostly due to expensive raw materials. In addition, they are often in noble, luxuriously designed glass containers. By the way, the durability is beneficial: the smell lasts at least two years, with a lid closure even a little longer. scented candles z. diffusers

Diffusers with wooden sticks also release particularly lasting aromas - but gradually. The mixture of water, alcohol, dyes and essential oils must first be airborne. Delicate chopsticks made of wood, rattan or bamboo are dipped in mostly filigree containers with the mix. Then the liquid climbs up and is released to the environment, all day long. The more chopsticks are put into it, the more present the mixture is. Much more restrained and only to the immediate environment leave diffusers of clay the flavors. A fragrance oil is dropped on the porous surface and gradually evaporates. They are great for anyone who shares a room with others (for example, placing diffuser stones next to the computer in the office). Diffuser with chopsticks z. room sprays

Room sprays are a quick fix. Literally at the push of a button and quite wonderfully light, they atomize fine essences via a pump sprayer. The fragrance is immediately there and also flies relatively soon with the alcohol. The is in the sprays (besides water) as main carrier substance and natural preservative. Incidentally, there are also sprayers that clean the room energetically, for example with ethereal silver fir or lavender oil. Incidentally, this is a classic in the field. Lavender, the name of the blue-flowering medicinal plant, is derived from the Latin word "lavare", meaning "wash". room sprays z. Crabtree & Evelyn, Esprit Home, Culti, Weisswange, Neom. aroma lamps

Aroma lamps are suitable for dosing in a very targeted manner. In a shallow dish, water (with essential oils) is heated over a tealight. When the water warms and evaporates, it takes along the molecules of the oils. The intensity of the fragrance can be fine-tuned by the number of drops of oil that drip into the water (usually three to five drops). In this classic room fragrancing (and sprays) you also have the quality of the oils in hand: Instead of a "fragrance" or "perfume oil" you should buy a pure natural essential oil, the label on the label not only the botanical name but also country of origin and extraction.By the way, there should always be enough water in the aroma lamps: the oils will otherwise burn if the temperatures are too high. Essential oils for aroma lamps For example, there are: Farfalla, Primavera, Sanoflore and Taoasis.

Ironing water

Very subtle is the delicate fragrance, which presents itself alone when opening the cabinet. For example, because it was lined with lavender paper or because the laundry was ironed with perfumed water (especially for the steam iron). And for those who want to fall asleep particularly well and dive into their own world, there is now a very special series of bedding: "Pillow Sprays", which are simply sprayed on the pillow - that makes for beautiful dreams and also instantly brings in frequent travelers small piece of home in the hotel room. Interview: Why everything smells so good

Whether boutique or dentist - more and more often scented consciously. A pro says why. Dental practices smell of oranges for fear, even shoe stores only smell of leather thanks to a mixture of aromas. Robert Müller-Grünow knows what is behind the professional fragrance. Because it provides the right scent in more or less public spaces. He perfumed the Prada store in Milan with his company "Scentcommunication" - and most recently also Miele.

ChroniquesDuVasteMonde: Why do boutiques or companies need their own fragrances?

Müller-Grünow: Because there is no smell anywhere. It always smells of something, but mostly by accident. Smells we perceive immediately and unfiltered. First smell, then we think. If it smells bad for you in a store, you will not stay long - and probably will not buy anything. Or you will not be able to work concentrated in the workplace because you are not feeling well. Then the best interior design will not help.

ChroniquesDuVasteMonde: What flavors do you use to make people feel good?

Müller-Grünow: I have to find smells that, for example, convey the values of a brand. Tangerine oil, rose, orchid with vanilla, cocoa, moss, musk and sandalwood are combined in the Miele fragrance, which we have just developed for the new head office in the Netherlands. Mandarin and the orchid, reminiscent of freshly washed linen. Vanilla and cocoa are important baking ingredients and convey coziness. Miele should smell like home.

ChroniquesDuVasteMonde: And how does it smell in your apartment?

Müller-Grünow: At the moment to Lime, as a reminder of the summer. Each apartment has an inherent odor of body odor, cleaning agents, cooking fumes and building fabric - this is often perceived as foreign by visitors. But with small scent accents, you are distracting your nose.
