Short baby break = benefits in the job? Not correct!

What is this about?

The question most frequently heard by working pregnant women (besides "boy or girl?"):"How long do you get out?"

A question that is not so easy to answer!

Right, because here are many factors in: How long do I want to stay home with the child? How long can I afford it? Can my partner support me? And of course: What's best for my job career?

Most career counselors recommend a baby break as short as possible.

Right, even a year is considered job coaches as too long, because you could miss the connection. But is that always the case? A new study by the Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin für Sozialforschung (WZB) reveals something completely different: If parental leave is very short, women even have disadvantages - according to the surprising findings of social researchers.

Very short means ...

For example, only two months. Then the mothers would still be described as "raven mothers" and are regarded as unsympathetic, "says WZB boss Jutta Allmendinger to the Tagesspiegel.

What are the disadvantages?

The study shows that mothers who have only had a short break are less likely to be invited for job interviews. A parental leave of 12 months, however, brings no disadvantages for the career.

Is that also true for the men?

Surprisingly, the study sees hardly any disadvantages for fathers who want to get out for up to a year. If they only take a short break, but not either.

"Raven father" does not exist in our vocabulary ...

Exactly, unfortunately, the old stereotypes are still deep. Social researcher Jutta Allmendinger believes that this can only change if ALL workers have the 32-hour week - and parents can look after their families equally.

But the study result has a positive aspect after all.

Which one?

Mothers who want to stay out for 12 months do not have to feel guilty about their careers.
