Damn charming! What it's like to meet Michelle Obama

Michelle Obama describes herself as a "control freak"

It's not easy to meet Michelle Obama for an interview. She prefers to talk only to journalists she knows - she is a control freak, that's how she describes herself; She likes to know who she's dealing with in a personal encounter.

Nevertheless, my colleague Cornelia Fuchs, head of foreign affairs at the Stern, and I were lucky enough to have her in New York for her new book, Becoming? My story? (544 pages, 26 Euro, Goldmann) to meet.

I went through a proper casting

The procedure before was, however, anything but inviting, we went through a proper casting: had to submit CV and work samples, list people we had interviewed, the Seret service to submit our personal information, sketch topics that we talk to the former First Lady wanted to sign discretionary statements that we do not quote from it before the publication of the book.

And then she is just heartfelt and empathic

Then it was time to fly to New York, spend a night in a hotel box in Manhattan and the next morning to meet a good-humored, warm Michelle Obama.

Especially likeable: that she kicked her pumps for the photo of the common feet, so as not to tower over their conversation partners too much. For me a big moment - because I'm 1.80 meters tall and otherwise always the one who stands out on photos like a lighthouse!
