Interview: Jack Johnson about the miracle woman

Jack Johnson, 33, sings love songs for peace and considers women miracles

ChroniquesDuVasteMonde BALANCE: As a former professional surfer you have a very athletic body. Is that the reason why there are so many women among your fans?

Jack Johnson: (laughs) I pray to God that this is not the only one! And if the women really think so, then because they have not seen me up close yet. They do not know that I have wildly proliferating nasal hair and grow long bristles from my ears. Maybe it's just because of my songs. I mean - women like love songs. And I write many.

ChroniquesDuVasteMonde BALANCE: Sounds like a scam that makes a lot of money ...

Jack Johnson: I would not put it that blatantly. I think I've found a niche - with a sound that makes people happy and enriches their lives. It does not matter how old they are, which race or gender they belong to. I'm proud of that.

ChroniquesDuVasteMonde BALANCE: Love songs for everyone - how does your wife Kim think about it?

Jack Johnson: As my manager she is fully behind me. Since she can not think about it negative - otherwise she might have left me long ago.

ChroniquesDuVasteMonde BALANCE: Do pieces like "Angel" work on her as well?

Jack Johnson: I even wrote that extra for her - it was my Christmas carol for her. And it definitely worked. But it's not like love songs help me to get rid of trouble. Rather, they do not let him come up first. Women like it when you give them a song.

ChroniquesDuVasteMonde BALANCE: And what do you find interesting about a woman?

Jack Johnson: Except that she buys my records? (laughs) Actually everything. I think women are biological miracles. After all, they can get babies, fix cars, cook wonderful food, and make men like me happy people. I think that is a divine gift - which I would not want to do without. So I sing my songs to the people I love.

ChroniquesDuVasteMonde BALANCE: Are you not worried about turning your privacy abroad?

Jack Johnson: No. If I decided not to publish the personal songs, I would not be able to make any more records. I do not sing about people I do not know. We decided to share all the songs with the public. They are personal, but still general - and give people a good feeling. If they can make people love each other, they will bring more peace than a classic anti-war song. Love songs are probably the best you can write.

ChroniquesDuVasteMonde BALANCE: But songwriting is fast becoming a life's work. Do you still have time to surf there?

Jack Johnson: When I'm at home, I surf every day. Although: With two small children, I can be happy if I can do that once a day. There used to be a morning and afternoon surf. This is almost impossible.

ChroniquesDuVasteMonde BALANCE: After all, you often stand barefoot on stage.

Jack Johnson: Mostly I wear sandals. This is the preferred footwear in Hawaii. Even when people go to work, they only wear sandals. They are also the most comfortable when I travel. In other shoes, I always feel a bit restricted.

ChroniquesDuVasteMonde BALANCE: Will we only see you in Germany in the middle of July because it will be warm enough for your bare feet?

Jack Johnson: Yes, because I want to play in the open air. That makes me feel better than in halls.
