Do women have to shave their faces now?

At present, a new beauty trend is being discussed in the net: "Female Facial Shaving". A facial shave? In women? Seriously? We took a close look at the trend. What is behind it? And what should that bring?

The primary goal of "dermaplaning", as it is known in the cosmetics jargon, is not, as prematurely suspected, the hair removal, but the peeling effect. "The skin is foamed and then shaved with a sharp knife," explains Dr. Jan Nebendahl, a specialist in dermatology in Hamburg, the process. "However, this is how the uppermost skin layer is removed and a young, fresh complexion emerges - similar to a mechanical or chemical peel."

Long been trend in the USA and Japan

The method is not that new. In the US and especially in Japan, the facial shaving in women has been practiced for years. Apparently, the screen stars Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe have undergone this beauty treatment - for a baby soft Hollywood complexion.

Granted, the benefits of the treatment are unmistakable. The skin is not only hair-free and soft to the touch, then applied care products and their active ingredients can move much better. Another plus point: even those who wear Foundation, will be happy about the smooth complexion. Because the make-up can be applied evenly.

However, one should be careful with sensitive skin. She could easily be irritated by the shave. A gentle care should be applied afterwards in any case. Recommended are soothing products with aloe vera. Tip: It is better not to try this treatment directly before a big appearance, as redness can occur even with insensitive skin.

Is the trend also coming to Germany?

During the research, we did not come across any beauty salons offering "dermaplaning". Dr. Nebendahl suspects that the trend wave in Germany will be missed. If you still want to try "facial shaving", you can of course do it at home - and shave your eyebrows, for example. Dr. Nebendahl recommends shaving only on wet or damp skin. "Otherwise it can cause irritation or even injury." The skin should be pulled tight and shaved with short, fast, but gentle strokes and at a 45-degree angle.

Beauty blogger Julia Graf in shave trial:

By the way: The concern that the hair grow thicker, stronger and faster, is unfounded. The hair root, ie where the thickness of the hair is determined, is not affected by the shave. The hair grows at almost the same speed, thickness and strength as before. It might just look like the hair is a bit more bristly, because it is relatively straight cut off and the pores can expand through a regular shave.

But in the end, the question remains: Do women even feel like shaving their faces now? Where we have been looking forward to the sight of pubic hair in the shop window and armpit hair have almost become socially acceptable again.
