Angelina Jolie is now a lady

Angelina Jolie has received many honors for her acting skills. But this new title should make the US actress very happy. At the weekend, Queen Elizabeth II appointed her "Lady". Actually get these titles of nobility - in the men it is the "sir" - traditionally awarded only to Britons. But in special cases, the Queen also honors foreigners who are allowed to honor the title. As Buckingham Palace announced, Angelina Jolie receives the award for her commitment against sexual violence in war zones. For years, the 39-year-old has been using her popularity to fight for the rights of women and children.

Only a few days ago she hosted the acclaimed "Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict" in London. The four-day conference, led by Jolie and British Foreign Secretary William Hague, was about rape as a weapon of war. In her moving keynote speech, the actress appealed to politics to take decisive action against sexual violence in conflict: "As an international community, we are responsible for this, we must crush the culture of impunity and ensure that justice is the rule - and not the exception - for these crimes. " Rape described Jolie as a "weapon that targets civilians."

The Queen awards the titles of nobility each year to special personalities. Besides Angelina Jolie, the writer Hilary Mantel was also honored. Since she is British, she is now officially allowed to call herself "Lady Hilary Mantel".
