This is the safest airline in the world!
Never was so much flown as today. And yet, flying was never so safe. This was determined by the Hamburg Aircraft Accident Bureau "Jet Airliner Crash Data Evaluation Center" (JACDEC) in its annual ranking for the aviation magazine "Aero International". In their assessment, the accident researchers calculated the airline's traffic against the number of incidents and "total losses" of the past 30 years.
Cathay Pacific ranks # 1
As in the previous year, the airline Cathay Pacific from Hong Kong in 2016 was able to maintain its top spot as the safest airline in the world.
Among the top ten, however, only one European airline can be found: the Dutch KLM in 5th place. In the JACDEC safety list of the 60 largest airlines, Lufthansa remained in 12th place, Germany's second largest airline Air Berlin in 20th place.
Two low-cost airlines in midfield
In the midfield are two low-cost airlines represented: the British EasyJet (# 28) and the Irish Ryanair, which landed in 34th place before the Swiss.
Aviation safety: 2016 was a good year
Although there were several "total losses" among the 60 airlines with the world's largest transport volume, not a single fatality was to be lamented: "The positive trend in aviation safety continued over the past year," the authors of the study said.
And the "Federal Association of the German aviation industry" (BDL) reports: "Worldwide there were 19 accidents in civil aviation last year, in which fatalities were to be lamented (...). Nevertheless, 2016 is one of the safest years in aviation history."
The worst accident last year was the crash of a machine of the Bolivian airline LaMia in Colombia, in which 71 people died, including 19 footballers of the Brazilian first division AF Chapecoense.
