The Walking Dead: Zombie series recalls the glory days

Since the 8th of October (from 21:00 on Sky), the zombies of "The Walking Dead" shuffle over the German screens in their ninth season. It is fitting that the opening sequence bears the title "A New Beginning" (Original: "A New Beginning"). Because the urgently needed realignment of the badly criticized horror series is noticeable after a few minutes. This is beneficial for tension, but not always for logic.

Attention! The following sections contain massive spoilers on the episode "A New Beginning"!

Plow instead of machine gun

18 months have passed since the victory over Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan, 52). The fact that these were not stress-free shows impressively Rick Grimes' (Andrew Lincoln, 45) graying beard. Too many mouths with too little food to stuff it. His problem in the series is emblematic of the problem of the series last. Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus, 49) sums it up in a scene of the opening episode. In that he talks Rick into the conscience with these words: "Everybody is everywhere now, the little group we had in the beginning - we could do anything, that's the way it was." An indication that the AMC production will return to its celebrated beginnings?

The season before was fiercely criticized by many fans, especially for the lengthy and frighteningly boring firefights between Rick and Negan's followers. It almost feels like an internal mockery that in "A New Beginning" not a single shot is fired and Rick is looking for the future of his group in the past. Together with his faithful companions, he plunders a museum in Washington D.C., collects old agricultural equipment and a carriage there. Fully automatic weapons give way at least in the first episode so a plow and yes, no joke, a canoe.

Death means something again

Death is again given a different status. While the zombies were given fresh meat almost every second in the episodes, "A New Beginning" has a lot of airtime for mourning a completely unknown resident of Hilltop. This is on the one hand praiseworthy, looks after all the murder and manslaughter of recent years, but also strange. All of a sudden, extras are mourned after being sent into battle as cannon and / or zombie fodder without any problem? With this reorientation, the previous season seems even more absurd.

At the very least, the new episode fuels the hope that individual fates will regain importance. However, there was a very prominent death in addition to "admiring". Chef Weasel Gregory (Xander Berkeley, 62) has spun an intrigue too much. Because he wanted to recapture his Hilltop settlement of Maggie (Lauren Cohan, 36) by force and did not shy away from insidious murder, he found his end - at the end of a rope around his neck. Even if you do not even see the imprisoned Negan throughout the episode, his "education measures" have penetrated right up to righteous Maggie.

No indication yet

Squadron Nine leaves no doubt that between the still scattered followers of Rogue Negan and the sometimes revengeful people on the other side can cause trouble again at any time. There were no signs of what could happen to the character Rick in the coming episodes, yet. As you know, actor Andrew Lincoln has announced his departure within the current season.
