"Snape" actor Alan Rickman has passed away

Rickman, actually a theatrical actor, made his big breakthrough in 1988 as devious Hans Gruber, opponent of Bruce Willis in the first "Die Hard" film. At the age of 41, he suddenly became a sought-after star worldwide - and since then he has become an integral part of the British television and cinema landscape as well as major Hollywood productions.

Rickman eventually achieved his greatest commercial success as somber wizard teacher Snape in the "Harry Potter" feature films - a role that was perfectly tailored to him. Like few actors, Rickman knew how to highlight the humanity in the evil figures he played, which made them interesting for the audience.

The 69-year-old now succumbed to his cancer illness in London - according to official statements, "in the circle of friends and family". On Twitter, drama colleagues and companions mourn the loss of one of Britain's most prominent actors in film history:

What desperately sad news about Alan Rickman. A man of talent, wicked charm & stunning screen & stage presence. He'll be sorely missed

My thoughts are with Rima and the rest of Alan's family. We have all lost a great talent. They have lost part of their hearts.
