Renault Scénic: Yes, we can ...

ChroniquesDuVasteMonde editor Barbara Voigt on the new Renault Scénic Energy dCi 130: "High-tech at its best"

Square bore-stroke ratio, cylinder head with transverse flow, low-friction oil scraper rings, vacuum-controlled, cooled exhaust gas recirculation, variable swirl control. Everything is fine so far?

Anyone who really does not want more - and no less - wants to drive as an environmentally friendly car, can make the new Renault Scénic on high-tech at its best. Even Formula 1 technology is behind the relatively everyday packaging of a compact van that has been on the road for years as a popular family coach. But not yet with this eco-jewel, the Renault Scénic with Energy dCI 130 diesel engine plus company-internal environmental label eco2 and - premiere at Renault - consumption-saving start & stop technology.

The Renault PR strategists have declared it the "most fuel efficient model in its segment and currently the most efficient diesel engine in its displacement class on the German market" - all in all an important milestone in becoming the number one in Europe with the lowest CO2 emissions.

You, dear drivers, could support the ambitious plans. For example, by not letting go of the gears to the limit, but may turn up at 1500 revolutions by off the gas, as soon as you see a red traffic light somewhere ahead, by turning off everything that the automatic start & stop action out of action could put (among other things air conditioning, radio or window heating).

I confess: I have to practice. My test run with the flagship diesel was suboptimal - to put it mildly ...

To be fair, I should mention how pleasant the Renault Scénic is on the road and, despite its more opulent dimensions, in all corners. How quickly he can get going. How comfortable not only children travel on the three-seat back seat. How diverse the shelves and the transformational arts of the interior and trunk are. Not to mention the park (formerly: hand) brake, which automatically engages as soon as I'm on the mountain or turn off the engine.

Say, dear environment, is it bad if I also appreciate such tools?

INFO: The Renault Snénic (4.34 m long / 1.85 m wide / 1.68 m high) consumed in the version Energy dCi 130 according to the manufacturer on average 4.5 l / 100 km (CO2: 117g / km) and is up to 195 km / h fast. Price (with start & stop): from 25 500 Euro.
