Olympia: Carina Vogt flies to the gold medal

She had never won a World Cup show - and then she stands at the top of the podium at her Olympic premiere: with 227.4 points for her jumps on 103 and 97.5 meters brought the 22-year-old ski jumper Carina Vogt from Degenfeld at the Winter Games in Sochi the gold medal. With that she left the competition behind: For Daniela Iraschko-Stolz from Austria there was silver, the Frenchwoman Coline Mattel got the bronze medal. The Japanese (and top favorite) had won Sara Takanashi with a 103-meter set during the test-run. Vogt landed there with 100.5 meters in third place.

When, after the second round on the scoreboard, the one behind her name lights up, Carina Vogt's tears of joy roll down her cheeks. During the long minutes before that, she says later in the interview: "I just hoped that it would go to a medal, I did not know how far I've gone and what the others have done." My teammates kept telling me it would be enough, they got me, that was so beautiful that they were with me at the moment. "

Vogt has made it to the podium eight times this winter at 13 World Cups. She is currently second in the overall standings. Before the Olympics, she was optimistic: "If I get what I'm doing, I'll be in the lead."

The fact that women are allowed to compete in ski jumping at the Olympic Games is a first in Sochi. That's why Carina Vogt goes down in history with her victory as the first Olympic champion in women's ski jumping. Her team-mates from Germany finished in the lower ranks: Ulrike Gräßler in 22nd place, Katharina Althaus in 23rd place, and 15-year-old team-chick Gianina Ernst (whose start was on the verge of flu for a long time) in 28th place. Interview with coach Andreas Bauer: "Olympia keeps writing its own stories, and Carina did a great job today." We congratulate!

Carina Vogt on becoming the first female Olympic Ski Jumping champion (May 2024).
