Do not dance out of line

We talked to Peter Bartel. He is the owner of the dance school Ring 3 in Hamburg and is familiar with the dos and don'ts on the floor.

"Of course, you can go to school without a dance class, but it's just like being on the street without a driver's license - you have to know the traffic rules so you do not attract attention.

If you're not a dance professional, you'd better dance a bit more in the middle. It's like on the highway: If you're unsure and do not want to drive that fast then turn right. All those who feel safe, take the left lane on the freeway and dance on the floor as far as possible outside. There they can dance more energetic, because there is more space. If you accidently jostle someone, apologize politely.

It is very important: on the dance floor it always goes around to the left. For each dance, it is predetermined which foot you start with. For example, you always start the slow waltz with your right foot, while the foxtrot starts with the left foot. My rule of thumb: The dances that end in "a or he", like waltz, rumba or cha cha cha, always start with the right foot. The others, like Foxtrot, Mambo or Jive, start with their left foot.

If you can not remember your dance class at all, there is a simple step combination that you can dance to almost any song: the Discofox. The men start with the left foot, the ladies with the right. Then you take two steps, no matter in which direction, and an unloaded step, a so-called tep-step. You can dance this step set forward, backward or in the spin.

Of course, when you go to a dance, you also dance. If you are still asked and do not feel like it, be courteous in your refusal. Phrases like "I'm just dizzy" or "I just danced very long and would like to take a short break" show the other one without hurting you, that you do not want to go to the floor at the moment. Of course you do not need to wait until you are asked. Take the initiative yourself. "
