Götz George: He would have celebrated his 80th birthday today

Actor Götz George would have celebrated his 80th birthday this Monday. He was born in Berlin in 1938 as the second son of the couple Berta Drews (1901-1987, "The Tin Drum") and Heinrich George (1893-1946, "Götz von Berlichingen") in Berlin.

His movie debut was Götz George in "When the white lilac blooms again" (1953). With films like "Holidays with Piroshka" (1965) he became a heartthrob. Later, he solidified his place in the hearts of the audience through his role as the iconic Duisburg Criminal Commissioner Horst Schimanski within the "crime scene" series. It was followed by character roles and comedies like "Schtonk!" (1992) and countless awards, including 2003 an Emmy for "My Father" (2002). For outsiders surprisingly died the movie star on 19 June 2016 at the age of 77 years in Hamburg.

His legacy

What has remained are, of course, his many films. Apart from the cult commissioner, "The Sandman" (1995), "The Deadman" (1995), "Rossini - or the murderous question of who slept with whom" (1997) or "Nothing but the Truth" (1999) are unforgotten. Most recently, he appeared in the TV drama "Bad Weather - The Secret of the Past" (2016).

On July 23, the Götz George Prize will be awarded for the first time to the Götz George Foundation in Berlin. The endowed prize is to be given regularly and primarily to older actresses or actors and to honor their life's work. The Foundation's board of directors includes the actor's widow, Marika Ullrich, and his daughter Tanja George (51).

A role model for young actors

In contrast, the Götz George Young Talent Award for acting graduates, endowed with 10,000 euros, was awarded for the first time last year during the 2017 First Steps Awards. This prize can be given to a young actress or a young actor from one of the feature films submitted in the competition. This award, too, comes from the Götz George Foundation.

Star producer Nico Hofmann (58, "Our mothers, our fathers") said a year ago at the then new price: "From my own experience, I know how strong and committed Götz George recognized in his whole theatrical work always young talents and This team spirit, giving the younger colleagues their own experience, was both a pleasure and an obligation for Götz. "

"His calm has transferred to all"

And indeed, fellow actors like Henriette Confurius (27, "Tannbach") are still suffering from the collaboration. Ten years ago she shot Götz George "The November Man". What impressed her most about the altstar at that time, she once said in an interview with the news agency spot on news:

"I remember that everything was so exciting and disturbing for me, but Götz George had such a pleasant calm, serenity, joy and professionalism, and he did not take everything so terribly seriously. I liked that. " Götz George will never be forgotten.
