Chlorella - algae to detoxify?

What's the matter? The Chlorella is a favorite of vegans. Also because the microalgae contains vegan so important vitamin B12. Chlorella is said to be cell regenerating and rejuvenating, and thanks to its high chlorophyll content, it has a detoxifying effect, such as leading heavy metals out of the body. The alga is added to foods, especially smoothies and juices, or taken in capsule or tablet form.

Really a superfood? That is questionable. According to Stiftung Warentest, the algae preparations provide only a fraction of the nutrients for which they are praised when consumed as recommended. And the Association for Independent Health Care e. V. criticizes that the quantities of vitamin B12 proven in chlorella algae "are only ineffective analogues that are not usable by humans". The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) classifies as harmful in this concentration that chlorella tablets bind unwanted substances such as pesticides, fungicides and heavy metals in the body itself. In addition, some microalgae could themselves form toxins.

Tip: Prefer to eat edible algae, such as nori, wakame, kombu. These are harmless foods that can enrich the diet and provide valuable nutrients. But they can not do wonders.
