Baby on Board: Pregnant women should be aware of this!

Pregnant to New Zealand, on safari in Namibia or quickly for a business trip to New York? Many future moms do not want to just sit at home during pregnancy. But what works and what does not work?

Are you "Fit to Fly"?

To a degree, flying is not a problem. Lufthansa allows pregnant women to withdraw until the end of the 36th week. The matter is different with Ryanair. As soon as an "uncomplicated pregnancy" enters the 28th week, a "Fit to Fly" confirmation is mandatory. The woman gets from the midwife or the doctor. The form may not be older than two weeks when you take off.

If you expect twins or even triplets, you can fly with most airlines only until the end of the 28th week. From the 32nd week of pregnancy is over there at Ryanair. Very important: the mother passport must always be carried along!

These are the risks

Once the woman has made it to the plane, the next problem arises: on long flights, the risk of thrombosis is increased. Therefore, compression stockings and comfortable clothing are recommended. Even getting up once in a while helps to prevent it. If morning sickness is a problem, you should talk with your doctor about any medication before you fly.

In some cases expectant mums, however, should refrain from a flight entirely! Cardiovascular problems, severe nausea, thrombosis or high-risk pregnancies mean staying on the ground and preferring to take the train or the car.

Air travel is completely safe for pregnant women, says doctor (April 2024).
