Apply deodorant - in the morning or in the evening? That's the way it works best!
Is it true that an antiperspirant (a sweat inhibitor that works mostly with aluminum salts) is best applied in the evening for it to work best?
Dr. Dorothea Schweiger from the research laboratory NIVEA Deo answers us: Yes, it is actually beneficial to apply the antiperspirant in the evening before bedtime. The sweat glands are then less active and the aluminum salt (e.g., aluminum chlorohydrate, ACH for short) of the antiperspirant thus has sufficient time, unaffected by sweat flow, to act in the sweat gland exit. It inhibits the sweat flow in the armpits by narrowing the upper part of the sweat gland exits.
The best effect is achieved by applying the antiperspirant again the next morning after showering to replace the parts washed away by the shower.
Dr. Dorothea Schweiger gives tips on how the deodorant works even better:
- Apply the antiperspirant in the evening. The sweat glands are now less active and the product can unfold its effect on the skin unimpeded by sweat flow.
- An antiperspirant and deodorant should always be applied to clean, freshly washed and well dried skin. If you do not shower every day, you should at least wash your armpit and dry thoroughly.
- Use sufficient antiperspirant or deodorant and apply evenly.
- The antiperspirant or deodorant should be applied for ten minutes before dressing so that it is not accidentally wiped off with clothing.
- Those who do sports should not apply their antiperspirant or deodorant until the body has calmed down and it does not sweat any more. The same applies to the after-sweating after showering. Otherwise, the antiperspirant or deodorant will quickly "sweat away" and has no chance to fully develop its effectiveness on the skin.
