She wanted her baby to live - and gave it her own life

What a nightmare: In the 24th week of pregnancy, the three-time mother Cara Combs from Missouri learned that she has skin cancer - at an advanced stage. And that, despite the fact that her dermatologist only examined her last year and found nothing remarkable.

The doctors advised her to start the birth immediately in order to start chemotherapy as soon as possible. But because she wanted to increase her baby's chances of survival and wait until the 28th week of pregnancy to give birth, the 38-year-old decided to postpone the cancer treatment by a few weeks.

"There is no right decision here, we will both fight for our lives and I feel incredibly guilty about it," Cara wrote on her Facebook page in early November. Her plan was to start chemotherapy two days after the birth of her daughter Shaylin. But unfortunately it was different.

On 6th December, Cara finally gives birth to the little "Shay" by caesarean section. The photographer, the photographer Emily Lucarz, a friend of the family, captures the first hours of the only 1.2-pound girl in pictures. Shortly before, she also portrayed the entire family. The joy of giving birth, however, is very soon clouded, because with Cara it comes to completely unexpected complications.

She needs a new liver, but because of her cancer is a transplantation out of the question. Thus, their chances of survival also fall to zero. Only two days after delivery Cara Combs dies.

"She was the strongest person I've ever met, and the best wife and mother, she sacrificed herself so that our daughter can live on, thanks for all the support and prayers, she was and always will be for me." , husband Roy writes on the crowdfunding site GoFundMe. Originally, the family wanted to collect donations for cancer therapy. Around 60,000 euros have already been raised - money that will help the five-member family from St. Louis to live without Cara.
