A book that makes you run and laugh

There is a shortage in Germany of crèche places, women in management positions and reasonable salaries for nurses, for example. What is not lacking are running books. On Amazon alone you get under the keyword "running" 2751 books as a result.

Good, because running is a nice thing: the sport makes for a smile on the face of the runner (at the latest in the subsequent shower) and he makes the everyday annoyance disappear as well as the desk belly. The problem: who is looking for a good book, be it for the entry or, for example, before the first half marathon, it's hard. Despite the great offer.

Most exercise books kill us with training plans, nutrition tips and information on the right competition preparation. It is not pleasure to read it, but work. Hard work. Did you have to laugh loud when reading a book? Just. Neither do I.

At least not until the "exercise book" from the edition of the "Süddeutsche Zeitung" landed on my desk. Cover and title make a Spartan impression. A gray book with a black shoe sole print and the simple title "Laufbuch". Looks rather boring.

But it is not. On the contrary, the authors were extremely creative at tracking down previously unanswered, but very important, questions in runner life: "May I restrict my training in my life partner using a white lie to walk?", "Can I state my personal bests?" For the answers they have specifically picked up a sports philosopher. Very nice and the debate about barefoot running. A: "Renowned Harvard professor Dan Lieberman likes barefoot running." B: "Yes, but he is an evolutionary biologist, specializing in the skullcap." A: "Nike has sold more than a million pairs of the barefoot model Free." B: "But only as a casual shoe - no one walks with it." A: "Barefoot is better." B: "That's not true." A: "You are stupid." B: "Same."

How, you lack the necessary seriousness? Do not worry, also in terms of quality and depth of information, the "book" is one of the first in the goal. The running enthusiast SZ editor Jochen Temsch was co-authored by Urs Weber and Martin Grüning, two experts from the running magazine "Runners's Word". And they know what they're talking about, even when it comes to very practical things like running shoe purchases or heart rates. And they have the know-how and the necessary distance to the industry, in order not to let everything - and us - babble on.

Very sensitive of the three male authors, I find that they have also dedicated to the important issues for runners "hairstyle" and "make-up" own entries. For long-haired women, only four hairstyles come into play after running: Ponytail, Plain Braid, Ballerina Knot and Grace Kelly Banana. And on the topic of make-up recommend the runner the same as the bride on the wedding day: a foundation (camouflage) under the make-up - lingering, for the most beautiful day of life.

If you are looking for specific information, you will not have it easy with chapters like "head ahead", "chest out", "arms up". Fortunately, the registry can help in most cases. Otherwise, when reading the book, you will be entertained so well that you will want to read it from beginning to end anyway.

ChroniquesDuVasteMonde.com editor Monika Herbst could not do anything with running in the past. Until her move to Hamburg. She also wanted to run around the Alster - and has since a new favorite sport
