Women's quota on supervisory boards comes in 2016

Federal Minister of Women Manuela Schwesig and Federal Minister of Justice Heiko Maas (both SPD) have presented their plans for a statutory quota for women. As of 2016, the supervisory boards of listed and fully co-determined companies should be at least 30 percent female. The same applies to the proportion of women executives in the civil service. "It is high time to clear the way for the many outstanding women," said Manuela Schwesig. If a group does not meet the quota, the corresponding seats in the supervisory board should remain empty.

Companies that meet only one of the two requirements - that is, either listed or co-determined - must set binding targets to increase the proportion of women from 2015 onwards. The approximately 3,500 affected companies must regularly publish their progress in the women's quota.

The draft legislation should be launched in 2014 so that it can enter into force in 2015.
