The Granny Alphabet: An Ode to the Omis

He photographed Kate Moss with a bare bosom in the Scottish Highlands, riding pale-painted models on white horses through Victorian mansions and producing oversized insects for his lavish shootings. The imagery of British fashion photographer Tim Walker testifies to an exuberant imagination, and thanks to his morbid and kitsch-shimmering aesthetic he became world famous.

For his latest project, he has now devoted himself to grandmothers and their unbroken courage to live. The illustrated book "The Granny Alphabet" is about "the little old ladies who live around the corner," says the photographer. In his photos he portrays them in different situations, in the studio or at the women's home. He also documents the unique style of the Grannys, which expresses itself in a red plaid skirt with a color coordinated headscarf, sometimes in an ensemble of pastel shades.

The portraits of the old ladies he faces pictures of their favorite objects, including wool ball, jars or a dentition. The author Kit Hesketh-Harvey has written short verses. In a second part, you can see drawings by Vogue illustrator Lawrence Mynott, who has graphically translated the Granny ABC from "A like adventurous" to "C like chic" to "X like X-Ray".

Walker explains that his book is "half a photographic love letter to seniors, half documentation of the endangered species of the wonderful old ladies we all know." The Granny alphabet was published by Thames & Hudson in November. Walker donates all proceeds to Friends of the Elderly.
