Study: Women increasingly marry "down"

The number of highly qualified women has increased

In recent decades, the number of highly educated women in the US has risen. This has the chances of "marriage"? improved for American men.

For women, they have fallen. For example, marriage increasingly represents an economic rise for men, while women are more likely to marry a less educated man.

This change is mainly due to the growing salary adjustment, as a study by the University of Kansas has found. For the study, sociologists have analyzed gender-specific changes among married people between 35 and 44 years in the US.

In terms of marriage, men benefit from women's progress

It turned out that there are now more highly educated women in the US than highly educated men in the marriage market. "The model of marriage and the associated economic consequences have changed over time. Thus, it is more likely that women marry a less educated man ?, Study Director Chang Hwan Kim noted.

This change is mainly due to the fact that women's incomes have risen in recent years, while men's salaries have stagnated. The pay of the spouses is often the same, some even earned more women. This leads to the fact that the standard of living of married men increases without their own doing faster than in equally well-educated women.

For the first time, marriage is economically interesting for men

For scientists, this could also be an indication of why men do not complain. Thus, the quality of life is now determined more by the family income than by personal income. It therefore seems right for the man that his wife brings more income into the household than he does himself. This finding implies that marriage is for the first time important for the economic well-being of men.

In Germany, women still earn less than men

In contrast to the US, according to the Federal Statistical Office, the ratio between educated women and highly educated men in Germany has been balanced for more than three years.

German women, however, are worse off financially. Thus, the wages of women in Germany are 21 percent below those of men. Structural differences are mainly responsible for this unadjusted gender pay gap: women are employed in lower-paid sectors and professions, and occupy positions with lower job requirements in terms of leadership and qualifications, despite equal educational attainment. In addition, women are employed more often than men, part-time or marginally, and on average receive less money for the same activities.
