Nolde quite private

The painting hall

Whether oil paintings or drawings, whether influenced by impressionism early works or expressionist major works, whether landscapes or religious motives: no technique and no creative phase Emil Nolde (1867-1956), which would not be represented in this museum. Around 500 oil paintings as well as several thousand watercolors, drawings and "Ungemalte Bilder" Nolde are in the possession of the foundation Seebüll Ada and Emil Nolde, in addition almost the entire graphic work.

Emil Nolde: "Gaut der Rote" from the series "Ungemalten Bilder" 1938/45

It is unthinkable to show this large collection completely in the former living and studio rooms of Emil Nolde. Every year, for example, the museum exhibits other works by Nolde - each presenting a series of different topics. Returning is well worth it, because even connoisseurs can make one or the other new discovery among the approximately 170 images per year. Of course, it is not possible without a "classic". For example, floral motifs may not be missing in any year. But Nolde painted so many of them that it does not get boring anyway. Incidentally, the same applies to the so-called "Unmounted Pictures", which Emil Nolde secretly created during the Nazi era because he had been banned from 1941 onwards. There are around 1300 of these small-format watercolors, almost all of them are in Seebüll and are shown alternately.

The museum has chosen Nolde's self-portraits as well as his sea and mountain representations this year. The range of 46 self-portraits spans almost half a century - from a strict portrait from the early phase (1899) to the last self-portrait that he painted at the age of eighty.

Actually closely rooted in northern Germany and the sea, Nolde had been a charter teacher in St. Gallen since his earliest years, retaining a fondness for Switzerland and its mountains. Therefore, this year's exhibition shows sea scenes like "The Encounter on the Beach" (1920) or "High Crash Wave" (1948) and faces them the mountain landscapes Nolde.

Nolde's attachment to nature is expressed not only in his paintings, but also in the garden that surrounds the museum. Designed and designed by Emil Nolde himself, the garden is continued in his spirit, housing dahlias, tulips, roses, sunflowers and other beauties - a splendor of color that also distinguishes Nolde's works of art.

Star piece

Emil Nolde: "Entombment", 1915

One of the starpieces of the Nolde Museum is the "Entombment of Christ", created in 1915. Together with other religious motifs, it is exhibited in the basement - the former Atelier Noldes. There is also the nine-part altarpiece "The Life of Christ" (1911/12), which is an integral part of each annual exhibition in Seebüll.

special exhibitions

Special exhibitions does not show the Nolde Museum. It confines itself to showing only pictures of Nolde and only those that come from the own fundus.

If Nolde special exhibitions take place elsewhere, the museum lends pictures from its collection.
