The film
There is so little light in Precious's life like in the musty apartment in Harlem, where she lives with her mother (Mo'Nique, Oscar for Best Supporting Actor). With daydreams, the 16-year-old Precious tries to defy all problems that life puts in her way. Abused by the father, insulted by the mother, she is daily humiliated because she is overweight, can barely read or write and now expects her second child. But Fate passes Precious (Gabourey Sidibe) a straw - where she has to pull out with her own strength. Not only does Precious learn to read and write, but above all: self-confidence.
Director Lee Daniels has one with "Precious - Life is precious" stunning heroine or rather, he gives her a face, because she created the author Sapphire, who wrote the novel (Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay). He let Precious' inner strength, her humor and her enormous courage are almost physically palpableand in every single image of his fast, very modern, sometimes surreal film, the word "hope" seems to be brushed into it. Produced by Oprah Winfrey, the talk-lady of American television, plus a more than surprising Mariah Carey you've never seen before, and the musician Lenny Kravitz in a very atypical cast. And in the middle of it shines the wonderful Gabourey Sidibe, 168 kilos, who has never before stood in front of a camera, in the role of her life.
