How nice! Refugees from Syria become wine queen

The Freestyle to the Wine Queen is a very German tradition. Now, for the first time, a refugee from Syria has been crowned: Ninorta Banho.

Three and a half years after her escape from the civil war country, the 26-year-old was named Trierer Weinkönigin. For one year now she will represent the wine of the region at events and wine festivals.

However, the Syrian also wants her new office to be an "ambassador for integration? use. She wanted to help other refugees find their way around Germany and settle in, said Ninorta at her inaugural address. Trier has become like a home to her. And drinking wine she has very nice memories of happy family celebrations in Syria.

She wanted to become a judge in her previous life

Ninorta comes from the city of Qamishli on the Turkish border, where she studied law to become a judge. But during the Civil War, life became increasingly dangerous for the Aramaic Christian. Therefore she fled to Germany with her sister Fadia. Her parents were allowed to follow suit.

Last year, Ninorta already worked as an interpreter for other Syrian refugees at the Olewiger Wine Festival. There Peter Terges, chairman of the Trier-Olewiger winegrower association, noticed her enthusiasm for the wine. He wanted to work for the integration of refugees and suggested Ninorta as a candidate for the crown.

In September, Ninorta starts training as a specialist at the Employment Agency in Trier, where she is currently doing an internship. In order to become a judge, she would have to start all over again in Germany with her studies.

And her favorite wine? She likes to drink white wine - a lovely Riesling.
