Gyrokinesis: fitness course on the stool

Gyrokinesis - the exercises

Course Name: (Gyrotonic is a variant with devices) Duration: 60 or 90 minutes Offered by: Gyrokinesis comes from the USA and spreads increasingly in Germany. There are currently more than 200 studios and therapy centers in Germany offering training. You can find them at www.gyrotonic.com (click on "Studio Finder"). That's how it works: Condition ** Agility *** Muscle tightening *** Coordination *** Suitable for: All. Helps against back pain and tension, trains the spine, abdominal and pelvic floor muscles. That's it Gyrokinesis is a yoga concept and means translated as "circular motion". The participants expect three-dimensional, circular movements. Gyrokinesis ensures an erection from the inside and thus a good posture. It was invented by the dancer Juliu Horvath and indeed already in the early seventies.

That's how it was: Even getting started with Gyrokinesis is unusual: There is no classic warm-up program, but an "awakening", as Bettina Preuschoff calls it. Bettina Preuschoff is a trained stage dancer and owner of a studio for Pilates and Gyrokinesis in Hamburg-Alsterdorf. At the Hamburg Sports Congress, she gives a course in Gyrokinesis, the new trend from the USA.

Hardly anyone has done Gyrokinesis before. Expectantly the participants sit on a stool. For "Awakening" we massage ourselves, including ears, temples and jaws. We pull fingers together, rub hands together, stroke over upper arms or hit elbows. The whole body is "woken up", including the feet. For this we should only reach with our fingers between the toes and move the foot in all directions and then stretch the toes against each other, to "toe-pieces", as the trainer says. She looks into some skeptical faces.

As we then roll alternately in front of and behind the ischial tuberosities - the buttocks on which we sit - and are supposed to perceive how the tension in the pelvic floor builds up and down, the first participants pack their bags and leave. It is above all men who apparently can not do so much with the course.

Others are very impressed by the exercises. They look properly absorbed while sitting on stools with their legs apart, making wide arm movements forwards and backwards to "open the armpit" and, during the exercises, exhale loudly and yawn unchecked.

With our trainer, the accentuated breathing sounds almost like a moan. Now it gets a bit scary for me. I did not want to do any self-discovery. Pictures are supposed to simplify our exercises. Once we let ourselves float like seagrass in the water (to massage the bladder and later heart and diaphragm), then we move like a snake. We stretch our arms alternately in the air, while sliding down a hand hits the ribs.

Several times we open the upper body in exchange for the "arch" and round it to the "curl", followed by exercises to the side. You notice that they do the spine well. The movements are rounder and smoother, the stiff desk attitude is forgotten after a while.

Conclusion: The almost groaning, loud exhale and the exercises on the stool are getting used to and not everyone. But it's worth it to get involved. After the Gyrokinesis lesson, the spine is supple, the back is painless and you feel relaxed.
