Why it's so much fun to dress up for a nice occasion

On a Sunday many years ago My grandfather asked my grandmother to remove his black suit. In addition a white shirt and the most beautiful tie. My grandmother put on her dark blue Sunday dress and put a thick golden chain around her neck. Dressed like this, both went to the polling station and gave their votes to the young democracy.

On a monday many years ago I wrote in my diary: "Yesterday I was in the opera for the first time It was really great, because finally I was finally allowed to wear suspenders and nylons Unfortunately, I imagined all the time what should I do if I got up after the opera and my stockings fell off, but everything went well Oh, the music was very nice too. "

Today, on a Wednesday, I go to the theater. That's nothing special, I often go there. Ballet performances or concerts are also part of my everyday life. I am standing in front of my wardrobe. Black always fits, but also jeans or the light gray tight skirt. It's a shame, I think, that everything works. In suit for the conference, in sneakers in the opera. If nothing else is extraordinary, how am I to be extraordinarily happy and express the joy? I take a blouse out of the closet. I once bought them in Lyon when I was surprisingly invited to a 700-star restaurant. Cream-colored, made of very fine silk, with refined decorative button placket. An almost transparent touch, perfectly cut. For the rest of the evening, I enjoyed the happy unity of space, food, luxury, people, and me in the middle of everything.

Of course I'm happy that there are no more rigid rules and that clothes do not decide whether someone is admitted to an exhibition. But what speaks against getting dressed differently in certain places and on special occasions than in others? We do it anyway. Because it is practical. In bed I put on a nightgown and no bikini. When climbing mountains flip-flops would be absurd, because life-threatening, dancing is the rhythm with rubber boots. But it's not always about the practical, but sometimes about the opposite: culture. Culture makes ideas visible, creates visions, brings fantasy and wishes to the world.

I have to decide. In two hours I see Goethe's "Faust". It would be funny to adapt your own appearance to the contents of the culture.

Transforming, playing, celebrating, this makes the clothing culture possible. In the ballet, a delicate silk scarf around the shoulders would be good, dancing with every breath I take. I go to an exhibition in black so that I stand in the background and the pictures in the foreground. I do not choose a leather jacket for a rock concert. That's what the boys and girls wear on stage. And what do I put on when I go to a reading? Maybe something black and white?

And what suits Faust? Best some Mephisto red. I did not. But there I see the thick golden chain of my grandmother. Outstanding: Goethe culture plus financial crisis culture plus traditional jewelery. "On the gold hangs, everything is pushing for gold."
