Chocolate ice cream in the test: Which is the best?

From discounters to premium brands: Stiftung Warentest has searched for the best chocolate ice cream among 20 products. The criteria for the judgment to be decided were the type of ice cream, sensory evaluation, the price per liter and the number of calories.

Generally positive were the lack of germ load and inconspicuous pollutant content. Seven of the 20 test products were rated GOOD overall. In total, ten products performed only SATISFACTORY. Including e.g. the discounter varieties of Netto Marken-Discount or Lidl. They did not convince in their consistency or taste. Even the ice of the brand Florida ice has disappointed in the test. Instead of real chocolate, there was only cocoa as an ingredient. Here the list of ingredients on the packaging promised more? a no go for connoisseurs!

Test winner: Premium beats discounters

The price range in the test ranges from discount ice cream for € 1.49 per liter to the same amount of Häagen-Dazs Classics Belgian Chocolate for just € 11. But the investment is worthwhile: The Häagen-Dasz chocolate ice cream made it to the test winner with its fresh cream note and the tender melting chocolate rasps. The sensory evaluation (taste and texture) got a smooth 1.0.

Criticisms for the test winner

The criticisms are obvious: the Häagen-Dasz chocolate ice cream is expensive and very high in calories. In addition, the rasps in the ice are just a chocolate-containing preparation. But Häagen-Dazs has mixed liquid chocolate with the ice cream to compensate!
