PlayNetwork, an American service provider that compiles lists of Christmas carols for retailers each year, has now reported that Mariah Carey and her Christmas song are no longer # 1. From the hitlist throne came the pop diva from the band "The Shins" and their 2012 cover version of Paul McCartney's "Wonderful Christmastime" as the most played Christmas song in department stores.

After more than two decades at the top of the list, Carey continues to rank second, followed by other well-known vocalists such as Ella Fitzgerald, Bing Crosby, Christina Aguilera, Jack Johnson, Kelly Clarkson and Michael Bublé. Incidentally, The Shins also managed to overtake Paul McCartney and the original "Wonderful Christmastime" (1979). He ranks 17th with his version. There are also critics who have called "Wonderful Christmastime" as one of the worst Beatles songs. Taste and success do not always go hand in hand.

Although Carey was forced to claim first place in PlayNetwork's list, she still tops the popular hit list Billboard's Holiday 100.
