Redemption for the body

ChroniquesDuVasteMonde: Why is it so hip to eat vegan?

Professor habil. Christoph Klotter: Because vegans are the morally better people. It's really about the question of guilt. Vegans are less guilty than others who kill and eat animals or use their products to live. To pay off his guilt, people used to sacrifice to the gods. In the meantime Essen has developed into an ideological war. In the past people fought for political utopias. Today, one seeks salvation and promises of happiness for one's own body.

To what extent do food scandals play a role in the vegan movement?

Barely. There is a global trend against the food industry, among people with higher education. The masses do not care about scandals, buy where it is cheap.

On the Internet you can find abstruse vegan dietary recommendations to eat about 30 bananas a day. How serious can you take something like that?

This is sectarian behavior. And it's even more promoted by social media. They offer the possibility that anyone can become a cult leader, through a certain number of followers. Everybody is allowed to be an author, an author and seeks his publicity today. This is a process of democratization, which changes eating habits. The advice of the real experts is less in demand.

One has the impression that there are also eating disorders people on the way.

It can be. We call the compulsion to over-control over eating to get it right, as Orthorexia nervosa. This eating disorder leads to social isolation and eventually even depression.

Are these people really isolated? They have their public on the Internet and followers ...

In the net they are not isolated, because they can communicate with each other. But at work and in private life already. As one becomes an outsider with an extreme eating behavior.

Wondering if these people live the way they recommend it to others.

That is uncertain. The social media offer the opportunity to propagate the supposedly best, but to do it differently. No one notices. When I eat a piece of schnitzel as a vegan, I just go out of the platform, I've disappeared. Nothing and nobody is checked there. The social media are a purgatory of vanities and create a society of self-promoters.
