Kim Kardashian and Co .: psoriasis does not stop at the stars

Those who have them often feel unwell and suffer from the looks of others: psoriasis gets under the skin. Even stars like Kim Kardashian West (38) or Cyndi Lauper (65) suffer from the chronic skin disease, psoriasis, which manifests itself as itchy, scaly skin. Today, October 29, the World Psoriasis Day is celebrated annually. In Germany alone, around two million people are affected. Worldwide, the World Health Organization (WHO) has 125 million affected people. So the celebrities master their everyday life and their career despite psoriasis.

Psoriasis pop icon: Cyndi Lauper

With hits like "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" and her songs for the Broadway musical "Kinky Boots", she's been in a good mood since the eighties. But for years pop icon Cyndi Lauper felt uncomfortable on stage. What she thought was a rash caused by hair dye turned out to be psoriasis. "I've had a lot of pain," she revealed in an interview with Everyday Health. She eventually found help with a dermatologist specializing in psoriasis. Cindy Lauper was prescribed a new drug with the active ingredient Secukinumab. Such biologics are more effective and more tolerable than conventional ointment, cream or tablet treatments.



Sido raps about his illness

In 2006, Paul Würdig (37) aka Sido rapped in his song "1000 Questions": "Why do I have psoriasis, tell me why itches." The skin disease restricts the Berlin musician and producer above all in one thing: he loves to get tattooed. For acute psoriasis, however, Sido has to do without it.

Olympic champion Julius Brink sees it positively

In 2012 he won gold at the Olympic Games: beach volleyball player Julius Brink (36) fought his teammate Jonas Reckermann (39) to the finals. The professional career he has now finished, he still carries a fight: Since his puberty, the 36-year-old suffers from psoriasis. He knows the stealthy looks of strangers and the questions about his skin. "This has burned deep into my memory," admits Julius Brink in an interview. But with moderate sports and healthy nutrition, he masters his everyday life. He has also learned to deal with the disease positively.



Ariane Hingst: role model in sports and self-confidence

Also footballer Ariane Hingst (39) celebrated sporting success despite psoriasis: 2004 and 2006 winning the German championship with the 1st FFC Turbine Potsdam, 2003 and 2007 World Champion with the women's national team. Today, she works as a co-trainer at VfL Wolfsburg and is not only a model for the players because of her career: even with psoriasis on her arms, she proudly raised the winners' cups. Ariane Hingst says confidently: "I do not know the feeling of being ashamed of psoriasis."

Maren Gilzer suffered in front of the camera

Maren Gilzer (58) always had to cut a fine figure as the fairy godmother of the "wheel of fortune". That she sometimes did not find it easy because of her psoriasis, she admitted in 2016 in an interview with spot on news: "I had to focus on the camera, not to scratch it!" Fortunately, the presenter and actress has now found her personal remedy: an ointment with cortisone and antibiotics.



Successful despite minor flaws: Cara Delevingne

Models and actors are under constant observation, the public expects a flawless appearance. Cara Delevingne (26) braved the pressure and tweeted: "I have psoriasis and that leaves scars and I'll have the rest of my life." Relieves stress in her new thrusts, she tries among other things to counteract with yoga. And for red carpets, the 26-year-old does not even bother to cover the affected skin with make-up.

Kim Kardashian West hopes for relief

Kim Kardashian West was diagnosed with psoriasis in 2010. On board: Cameras recording the doctor's visit to the reality TV show "Keeping Up with the Kardashians". A shock to the selfie queen, known for her perfect looks. On her website in 2016 she spoke at length about the disease. To curb the inflammation of her skin, use a cortisone cream every night and get cortisone every few years. Kardashian hopes to be cured someday. But until then "I learn to accept it as a part of me".

World psoriasis day on October 29th

Every year on the 29th of October, the World Psoriasis Day, clubs and institutions support those affected.Under this year's motto "Act together!" The aim is to protect patients from stigmatization and exclusion. Celebrities, who feel that they are destined for the disease, can serve as an example for victims: they have their own strategies for how psoriasis can be controlled in everyday life.
