Experts warn against extreme tick-risk this summer

Being vigilant, who is out there on the road: This year probably so many ticks are on the way as long ago. Gerhard Dobler, researcher at the Center for Infection Research, warns: "We will have the highest number of ticks in the last ten years."

Complex predictive model sounds the alarm

The expert has developed a complex model with his colleagues that allows him to predict every year how many ticks will be traveling. Among other things, the researchers measure the density of juveniles in winter, but also consult environmental parameters. Dobler's warning: "Overall, the risk is particularly high this year."

For the summer of 2017, the experts had predicted 187 ticks per measuring surface and found 180. Almost a point landing. For 2018, the highest number of ticks ever found was predicted with 443 ticks and Dobler now knows that this prediction will also be fulfilled exactly. "We have the highest number of ticks we have collected since the beginning of the study - good for the ticks, bad for us."
