Every fifth child can not read correctly: sign now for more education!

18.9 percent of children can not read correctly

In December it became known: Just under a fifth of ten-year-olds in Germany can not read that the text is understood, But those who can not read meaninglessly after elementary schooling will no longer learn it in secondary schools - there reading is no longer taught but presupposed.

In international comparison, Germany has slipped from 5th place to 21st place in all participating countries since 2001 and is now below the EU and OECD average.

Reading is THE key qualification for participation in society

In addition to the consequences that a lack of reading ability has for each individual, the consequences for society are enormous. Without the opportunity to learn a skilled profession, most of these people will need government support, the prominent initiators of the petition predict? Every child must learn to read !? - including children's book author Kirsten Boie, presenter Bettina Tietjen, children's songwriter Rolf Zuckowski and the former daily news presenter Ulrich Wickert.

A country like Germany, whose most important resource is a high level of education, can no longer delegate the problem to parents and volunteers, according to the signatories. The 16 countries that have overtaken Germany in the ranking showed that and how it is possible to significantly increase the reading ability of all children at school.

This is what the signatories demand:

? Learning to read has to move much more into the focus of educational policy.

? In elementary schools, support measures must be introduced based on the findings of reading research and the experience of teachers.

? These additional hours may not be used for substitution lessons.

? Sufficient primary school teachers need to be recruited to achieve this goal. In other words: at universities, significantly more places must be created for teacher training.

? There must be school libraries, readings and reading programs, especially in those schools whose pupils are less educated.

? For this purpose, sufficient funds must now be shown in the households. Reading should not be sacrificed to the current (costly) intensive efforts to digitize schools.

? Primary schools must be able to teach reading to all children!
