Easter Lamb: meaning and tradition

The Lamb has always been the symbol of innocence, but in Christianity it has got a whole new meaning. Jesus himself is called "Lamb Of God" "that takes away the sin of the world" (John 1:29). By sacrificing himself vicariously for the people, he redeemed the people. Christians celebrate it with the Easter Lamb of redemption.

In the early days of the Christian faith, it was customary to slaughter a lamb for Easter, place its flesh under the altar for consecration, and then eat the lamb on Easter Sunday, the day of resurrection, as the Easter roast (and first meal after Lent). The resurrection is, besides the birth of Jesus Christ, the highest feast of the Church and is especially appreciated with lamb.

The Easter Lamb today

Today the custom is a little less archaic. Although we still eat roast lamb or lamb at Easter, the lamb is increasingly being replaced by other meats. For example, Easter or rabbit or pheasant are common. The traditional sacrificial lamb actually only plays a role in the Greek Orthodox Church.

With us, the lamb form is found especially in the baked Easter lamb again. But chocolate Easter lambs also enjoy great popularity every year and are a popular gift - regardless of which Easter customs one cultivates otherwise.
