At this sight, you do not know if you should laugh or cry: This historic church statue suddenly looks like it has left a toy story movie!

What happened there?

Saint George, represented by the monument, was a wooden statue from the 16th century. For more than 500 years Georg had fought a dragon here in Estella, and over the years his complexion had gradually faded.

So what did the church do? She thought, "You have to do something" - and prompted a restoration. Stupid only: The church did not speak with local council or administration, who would certainly hire an expert. Instead, the order went to a local art teacher.

The good woman certainly did her best - but the result clearly shows why there are experts in the field of restoration who learn the job for a long time. The art teacher had apparently just plastered the chipped areas and painted the poor George with the next best color.

That's like then!

The restoration disaster is reminiscent of the Jesus fresco "Ecco Homo", which fell victim to a similar action a few years ago. Here was the failed rescue from a handsome image of Jesus something that is reminiscent of a hairy monkey. After all, has the debacle caused a good influx of tourists?

Every now & again, I remember the Ecce Homo botched restoration, & it never fails to make me laugh. pic.twitter.com/2OhmsOMa1D
